An avalanche probe is designed to save lives.

In an avalanche, time is of the essence.  If the buried is not rescued within 15 minutes of the avalanche’s impact there is little chance of survival.  An avalanche probe is a long thin stick-like device that (when used properly) can quickly break through layers of snow and help you determine the exact location of the victim.  Depth markers are indicated on the shaft of a probe that can help you determine the depth and position of the victim.  

Shopping for the right avalanche probe requires a bit of thought into the design and the functionality of it.  A standard length for an avalanche probe is 240 cm’s or 7.87 feet.  Keep this in mind if you are requiring more depth performance.  Avalanche probes are sectional in design so that they are easy to transport. Be sure that they are extremely efficient in extending so that rescuing does not get compromised due to assembly issues.  Probes designed of aluminum and carbon can resist freezing and sticky snow when in use.

Between 55 and 65 percent of victims buried in the open are killed and only 80 percent of the victims remaining on the surface survive. (McClung, p.177).   If you do not have the training and certification to prevent avalanches from occurring and to react post- avalanches then don’t go.  You are putting yourself and other skiers (whether in your group or not) at grave risk.  As the saying goes, "If you don’t know, don’t go".
