Choosing the right sleeping bag can make or break your connection with the great outdoors. Yet, there are multiple variables to consider when shopping for the right sleeping bag. Here are a few to factor in:
- What is the coldest nighttime temperature you plan to encounter throughout the seasons? Then purchase a sleeping bag rated 10 degrees warmer than the coldest temperature that you expect on your outings.
- How many seasons will you be camping in? Winter camping is a class of its own and requires specific camping gear.
- There are two types of filling in sleeping bags: down-filled and synthetic filled:
- Mummy-style vs. rectangular sleeping bags:
- Mummy-style is best for colder, higher elevation climates keeping you insulated.
- Rectangular sleeping bags give you more room for moving around but also require more body heat. They are better for warmer climate camping.
- Are you a cold sleeper? If so factor in a warmer sleeping bag to compensate for the added warmth that you need. Or include a sleeping bag liner for added insulation
- How small does compress to? Are you a backpacker and require light packing? The Marmot Arroyo weighs 1lb 8oz; Mountain Hardwear’s UltraLamina 32 is ultra light at 1.15lbs; and North Face Cat’s Meow weighs in at 2.6 lbs.
Along with a sleeping bag be sure to include:
- A sleeping pad that offers comfort and added warmth between your sleeping bag and the ground. Click here for choosing the right sleeping pad.
- A tent. For tents click here.
